Review: Poison Study by Maria V. Snyder (Chronicles of Ixia 1)

Blurb:

How much is your life worth?

In the territory of Ixia the government maintains control through the Code of Behaviour, forbidding the practice of magic, but danger lurks in mysterious places…

Imprisoned for murder Yelena Zaltana’s punishment is death, until she is reprieved – for a price.

As the Commander of Ixia’s food taster she will risk assassination from poison daily, a position she would be a fool to refuse… In a world where magic equals death and freedom is for the lucky few, survival is all Yelena has and the battle for her life has just begun.

My Review: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

To be honest, I actually really enjoyed Poison Study. I knew I would somewhat enjoy it, but I think I underestimated how interesting the story would actually be. I mean really, so many things happen.

It took me a while (in terms of hours) to read this book but I was actually so engrossed that I read it in about a day. It was really fast-paced, which I loved, and there was a lot going on, as well as lots of mysteries, which kept me feeling on edge.

I think Potions Studies was the perfect mix of suspense, mystery and fantasy, with a little bit of romance thrown into the mix. To be honest, Valek's relationship with Yelena was a bit odd and I felt their reactions to each other were strange at times, but then what experience do I have being in love with someone who is essentially my boss while being a food taster who could die at any moment, right?

Anyway I absolutely recommend this one and will definitely be sure to read the next.
